What happened to us
Our home was damaged, and the promised help never came
I did not leave our home by choice. It was damaged during the conflict, and the roof was left unfinished. I waited because I truly believed government help would eventually reach us and the repairs would continue. Weeks became months. Our turn never came.
For now, my wife and children stay with my father. When the house is too crowded, I sleep in a car, at work, or in the home of anyone who has space for me. We are a family, but we no longer have a place where we can live together.
Before this happened, I worked as a computer engineer. Earlier this year I lost that job as the war and the economic crisis hurt businesses across Iran. Friends now send me whatever small projects they can find. When work is available I take long hours, sometimes two shifts, but it is never steady and the daily costs of a family do not stop.
The cost of getting through each month
Life in Iran has become much harder for us over the past year. Prices keep rising, and inflation means that the money I earn buys less and less. Food and other everyday essentials take more of it, while the cost of repairing our home remains beyond what I can afford.
My current income is roughly the equivalent of US$200 a month. I am trying to keep my wife and children going on that, with overdue loans and an unfinished home still hanging over us. I keep taking whatever work I can find, but I cannot cover our daily needs, catch up on the debt, and make the house safe with this income.
I sold my car. Then I sold my phone. I put that money into the house, hoping I could finish enough of it for us to return. The money ran out before the repairs did. I have nothing else left to sell.
We bought this home with a marriage loan and other bank loans. Those payments have started again. The delays I was given are finished. When I wrote this on 24 August 2026, I expected the overdue instalments and cheques to reach court within about two months. I am afraid I could be detained if I cannot resolve them. Even if I find stable work tomorrow, the old debt may take everything I earn.
I have never asked strangers for money before. I used to be the person who tried to help others. Writing these words feels heavier than I can explain, but I have reached the point where staying silent would hurt my family more than asking.
